Kanyakumari: A 55-year-old, mentally ill woman, confined to a small room for 10 long years near MarthanÂdam, in Kanyakumari district, has been rescued by PadmanaÂbaÂpuam RDO Arun Sathya.
On a complaint from some of the villagers at Kollanji, near Marthandam, that a woman was confined in a single-room house for about 10 years, Arun Sathya ordered the VAO to investigate the matter.
The probe revealed that Mary, a postgraduate, became mentally ill at the age of 25 and since then she had been looked after by her elder sister. As her sister died 10 years ago, Mary’s relatives locked her up in the house so that she would not create problems for the villagers. She was given food and water regularly through the window by her relatives living nearby though they did not care about giving her medical treatment.
As Mary turned violent, we could not go near her even to give her a bath for the past few months, said one of her relatives. So, Pusha developed lesions all over her body and, moved by her plight, the villagers informed the officials.
Mary was rescued and admitted her to the government hospital from where she would be shifted to a government-recognised asylum. The villagers alleged that some of Mary’s relatives had illegally shared her ancestral properties among themselves by obtaining her signature.
