Chennai: Twenty three archers and four coaches from Tamil Nadu will be part of the Indian contingent for the indoor archery world championships to be held in Singapore from December 8 to December 10. While the Indian con tingent includes big names such as Deepika Kumari, Dola Banerjee and Rahul Banerjee, Tamil Nadu will be creating a record of sorts by having the largest number of archers from one state participating in a world event. A total of 218 archers are competing in this championship.
The event starts with a quali fying round where compound as well as recurve archers will shoot 60 arrows from 18 meters and strive to qualify to play the main draw.
Chief coach Shihan Hussaini said: “We are confi dent of bagging at least three medals because of the inten sive training that the archers have undergone. We concentrat ed on the basics and created an event atmosphere so that the archers do not find themselves nervous during the meet.“ Archer Sundar Thondaman says that the exposure of a world event is necessary to target the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“The entire team is keen on making use of this opportunity to the maximum. In events like the world champi onship, every archer gets a chance to brush shoulders with the stalwarts of the sport. It is going to be a learn ing experience for all of us and helps us move towards our target of winning a medal in the next Olympics“.
