Kozhikode: After the Catholic clergy’s tough stand on the Madhav Gadgil and Kasturirangan reports, Kanthapuram Abubacker Musaliyar, leader of the powerful Sunni Muslim group, has also come out against the reports.
The ecology of the Western Ghats can be preserved only by taking into account the diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of the inhabitants of the region, Kanthapuram said.
The two committees have failed to adopt such a democratic approach leading to the opposition from the people, he added.
The people in different states of the Western Ghats region have varied lifestyles and agricultural practices and bringing all of them under a single regulatory framework is not only impractical but also childish, he said.
People in the affected areas should be included in the committee formed to study the Kasturirangan report, he said.
