Google to send robots for delivering groceries
London: Google’s new robotic grocery delivery service is expected to challenge Amazon’s drone project which envisages transporting goods to its customers by air.
According to a report, Google’s robots could be paired with its self-driving car research to help automate the delivery of goods to people’s doors.
Google said it has taken over seven robotics companies in the past half-a-year to develop its own product.
A company spokesman confirmed that the effort was being headed up by Andy Rubin, who was previously in charge of the Android operating system.
However, Google does not plan to sell the resulting product to consumers at this stage.
Recently, the company began a same-day grocery delivery service in San Francisco and San Jose, called Google Shopping Express.
The news of robotic grocery delivery service being developed by the search engine major comes right after Amazon’s plans to deliver products via drones within 30 minutes of placing an order.
The seven companies acquired by google to kick start its plans include Autofuss, Bot and Dolly, Holomni, Industrial Perception, Meka Robotics, Redwood Robotics and Schaft.
