Workshop on remote sensing at Andhra University
Visakhapatnam: Dr Thirumalachari Ramasami, secretary, department of science and technology, Government of India, stressed the significance of spatial data on natural resources generated by different agencies and how it can be of immense use, if integrated.
He was speaking after inaugurating a national symposium on ‘Remote sensing and geographic information system for environment: Emphasis on marine and coastal dynamics’ at the Dr Y.V.S. Murthy Auditorium, Andhra University, on Wednesday.
Dr Ramasami also spoke on the genesis of the national GIS project. He said the project has been approved at various levels after all stakeholders have realised the significance and utility of combining diverse spatial datasets under the umbrella of national GIS and that its implementation will require further work on standardisation.
The symposium has been organised under the joint aegis of the Indian Society of Geomatics and Indian Society of Remote Sensing and hosted by Andhra University and ISG— Visakhapatnam Chapter.
Vice-chancellor Prof. G.S.N. Raju and organising secretary Prof. K. Nageswara Rao, welcomed more than 350 participants from various departments, academic institutes and industries from Srinagar, Mangalore, Trivandrum, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Bhopal. Many foreign students at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun also participated.
