Shock in store for power consumers in AP
AP discoms want to pass on another Rs 9,339 crore to consumers in the form of additional tariff.
Hyderabad: The state discoms want to pass on another Rs 9,339 crore to consumers in the form of additional tariff.
The ARR (Annual Revenue Requirement) submitted by the four state Discoms to the APERC (Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission) for the year 2014-2015 has proposed increasing tariffs by 50 paisa to Rs 1.20 per unit for domestic consumers and up to Rs 2.50 per unit for other categories.
The APERC will hold public hearings after inviting objections and suggestions and give a final decision a month from now.
Once cleared, the new tariff regime, proposing a 20 to 30 per cent increase, will be implemented from April 2014.
With the revenue deficit estimates having increased substantially this year, the telescopic tariff regime that has been proposed will weigh heavily on all categories of consumers except agricultural consumers.
The hike will be to the tune of 50 paise (for consumption between 0 to 150 units) Rs 1.20 per unit (for consumption of over 150 units) for domestic consumers depending on the slabs while it will be Rs1.80 to Rs 2.50 for industrial consumers.

Hyderabad: The four state Discoms together have estimated an Annual Revenue Requirement of Rs 52,753 crore of which they will be able to come up with only Rs 36,345 crore, leaving a deficit of over Rs 16,409 crore.
Also, the ARR proposal for next year has indicated the need for power purchase from the open market due to expected energy deficits.
Moreover, the state government has agreed for an agricultural subsidy of Rs 7,084 crore for the “free power” to be provided during the period. That apart, an increase in customer charges from Rs 5 to Rs 20 has been proposed.
