Chennai: With the state receiving widespread rains, consumers received a temporary relief from the prolonged load shedding due to fall in power demand.
The widespread rain resulted in drop in power demand. Till a few days back, power demand was about 12,000 MW and it fell to 11,000 MW on Wednesday, a senior Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation official said.
Fall in demand has directly brought down the duration of load shedding in districts, which had been witnessing eight to 10 hours a day last week, to three to four hours. Most parts of the city got reprieve from the two hours of power cut once again thanks to rain.
According to Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation statistics, there was no load shedding enforced on domestic consumers on December 3 when the state recorded a total energy consumption of 225.68 million units. The quantum of load shedding enforced in the state has come down from 26.43 MU on November 30 to nil on December 3.
A senior official said wind power generation, which came to complete halt in the last week has been generating around 300 mw to 600 mw for last few days. Besides, one 600 mw unit of the North Chennai thermal power plant has resumed generation to help reduce the deficit faced by the state.
