Farmers can sell cane to any mill:?High Court
Farmers can sell their sugarcane to any sugar mill of their choice, says K'taka High Court
Bangalore: Giving relief to farmers of at least 81 villages in Davangere district, the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday said that they can sell their sugarcane to any sugar mill of their choice and other farmers, who are not part of the petition, can also sell their produce to any sugar mill after getting prior permission from district authorities.
The court gave interim relief, while hearing a batch of petitions filed by eight farmers questioning the state government’s decision to assign 81 villages in the district to two sugar factories, owned by Horticulture Minister Shamanur ShivasÂhankarappa.
The Undersecretary to the Industries and Commerce Department had passed the orders asking the farmers of 81 villages to supply their sugarcane only to Shamanur Sugars and Davanagere Sugars factories.
According to the petitioner farmers, they had been allowed to sell their sugarcane to any sugar mill of their choice after the Bhadra Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane Niyamitha in Doddabathi village stopped crushing sugarcane. They argued that the state government passed the direction without taking their opinion and allegedly tried to benefit only two sugar mills.
Orders reserved
The high court has reserved its verdict on the petitions over election to the posts of mayors and deputy mayors and presidents and vice presidents of seven city corporations and 201 local administrative bodies .
