FACT floats barge to ship ammonia
FACT floats barge to transport ammonia from Willingdon Island and Udyogamandal.
Kochi: The Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT) on Wednesday, floated a barge to transport ammonia from Willingdon Island and Udyogamandal to its Ambalamedu unit.
FACT’s Ambalamedu unit requires about 500 tonnes of ammonia per day for production of Factamfos. Till now this was being sent through rail wagons/ road tankers. Since Udyogamandal is not connected by rail, its dependence on road tankers was heavy. But now, this can be ferried across through the barge MV Hail Mary.
The barge can operate once a day since it takes three to four hours to cover the distance and will carry 192 tonnes of ammonia. The rest will be carried by road and FACT proposes to float another barge in the next nine months to boost its fleet, said CMD Jaiveer Srivasthava, at a press meet here.
The barge, HaIl Mary, a joint venture of FACT and the Backwaters Navigation Company, can ferry six bullets carrying ammonia. It is after a gap of nine years that FACT is making use of waterways to transport liquid ammonia gas.
