Vaishnavi lifts Karnataka spirits

Toommy Vaishnavi fetched the lone gold for Karnataka on the opening day of the National Junior Athletics Championship.

Bangalore: Toommy Vaishnavi fetched the lone gold for Karnataka on the opening day of the National Junior Athletics Championship, which got under way at Sree Kanteerava stadium on Tuesday .

The 13-year-old Vaishnavi, who trains at the Indo-German under V.R Beedu, logged 638 points in the girls U-14 triathlon event to claim her first junior National medal.

Vaishnavi, a student of Baldwin Girls High School, who took to athletics three years ago, had last month bagged the top spoils at the inter-zone junior meet, albeit in the long jump event.

On a day dominated by northern states and Kerala, the hosts also collected a silver and a bronze. In the U-14 high jump, Druthi C, the lanky city girl, cleared a distance of 1.47 metres to finish behind fancied Gayathry Sivakumar of Kerala.

Gayathry was in a league of her own as she cleared 1.55 metres with ease to eclipse the meet record of 1.52 metres set by Julie Badhi in 2010.

The class-7 student from Kochi comes from a family of high jumpers and holds the national record at 1.59 metres. She attempted to get past 1.58 metres, but failed to clear the height.

For Druthi, the silver, her first national medal will prove to be a morale-booster as the St.
Joseph's Convent student began training in high jump only a year ago. With the podium effort, she also touched a new personal best, bettering her previous show of 1.43 metres.

Fatigue got the better of Karnataka's rising talent Lokesh M in the boys' U-14 long jump event as he could manage only 6.14 metres to settle for the bronze. Chitra tops 1500M event Chitra PU lived up to her top billing in the U-20 girls 1500 metres as she blazed to victory, coming home in a record time of 4:33.82 seconds.

The Pallakad girl, who is on a golden run this season, was far from matched in the event as she kept a healthy lead throughout the race and outpaced her nearest opponent Monika Choudhary by a sizeable distance.

The Asian School Track and Field champion also rewrote Sunitha Rani's 17-year-old mark of 4:35.00 seconds.

Delhi, Haryana and Punjab athletes were in prime form as they returned rich hauls for their teams.
