Kochi: Bronze for Babitha at worlds

Following the footsteps of Lekha Unni, another Kerala girl C.T. Babitha bagged a medal in the World schools athletics championship at Brasilia in Brazil on Tuesday . Babitha won a bronze in the girls 800 metres behind Russian and Italian athletes. Another Indian, Anjana D.T. who qualified for the finals, finished in the seventh position. Babitha clocked 2:12.32 minutes for her bronze while Ekaterina Alekseeva at 2:09.66 and Elena Bello from Italy at 2:11.54 finished ahead of the Indian.

Kerala clinched a thriller by 2 wickets against Madhya Pradesh in a Cooch Behar trophy U-19 cricket tournament match at Perinthalmanna on Tuesday .

Chasing a target of 101, the hosts sprung a surprise by sticking to a disciplined line and getting breakthroughs at regular intervals. Kuldeep Singh led the attack with four wickets.

Kerala lost a wicket for almost every 10 runs added to the total and the match was virtually in a balance at 92 for 8 before B. Balu held his nerve to stay unbeaten on 16 and steer his side home. Earlier, MP relied on S.S.

Tiwari's heroic 68 off 202 deliveries as their remaining wickets were blown away . MP raised a total of 165 that set up a target of 101, which was only easy on paper.

Sree Venkateswara HSS defeated Campion School Edapally by 11 runs to reach the quarterfinal of 5th inter-school cricket tournament organised by Century Cricket academy here on Tuesday . Sreenath V.S. bagged 4 for 12, including a hat-trick as Venkateswara restricted Campion to 102 for 7 after setting them a target of 114 in the 20-over match.

In another match, SRK Gurukula Mandiram, Thrissur defeated Government HSS, North Edapally by 8 wickets.

Easy win for Kozhikode

Kozhikode drubbed Malappuram in the opening match of the 58th state senior basketball championship at Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur on Tuesday .

Anu Thomas top scored with 19 points as the girls from Kozhikode won the opener 60-20. Malappuram also suffered defeat in the men's category later on. Idukki defeated Malappuram 70-48 with Akhil Isaac scoring 23 for the winners and Harshad scoring a game-high 28 for the losing side. In another men's match Thrissur crushed Wayanad 55-22.

Kannur women defeated Kozhikode 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 in a Pool 'B' match of the state senior volleyball tournament held at Kulathapuzha in Kollam on Tuesday . In the late-night matches held on Monday, hosts Kollam defeated Thrissur 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 while Thiruvananthapuram edged Pathanamthitta 25-13, 2513, 20-25, 25-21 in the men's Pool 'D' and 'C' respectively.
Kottayam trounced Palakkad 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 in the Pool 'B' match.

The Kerala University inter-collegiate zonal cricket tournament will begin at Medical College ground in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday .

Six teams from the north and south zones have been divided into two groups, winners of which will directly qualify for the semifinals.

St John's Anchal, Mar Ivanios, M.G. College, Fathima Matha Kollam, University College and D.B. College Shastamkotta are the teams.

Vaisakan's first half goal gave S. N. College Kannur a 1-0 win over Farook College and a place in the north zone quarterfinal at Goal 2014 inter-collegiate football tournament at Koyilandi on Tuesday . The centre-forward scored the winner in the 15th minute as SNC reached within striking distance of qualifying to the final phase of the tournament, if they reach the semifinals. In another match, Christ College Irinjalakuda defeated Zamorin Guruvayurappan College 6-5 in penalties to make it to the quarterfinals after a goalless regulation time display.
