GM Sethuraman crowned champ

Hyderabad: Chennai based GM Sethuraman S P won the title at the second Hyderabad International Grand masters chess tournment after drawing with GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia in the 11th and final round at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Indoor Stadium at Yousufguda here on Wednesday .

Sethu finished with 8.5 points out of a possible 11 and finished tied first along with top seed Ivan Popov of Russia, who defeated Georgian GM Levan Pantsulaia in the final round.

But better Buchholz tie-break score helped Sethu finish at the top while the Russian Grandmaster had to settle with the first runner-up position instead.

Vidit Santosh Gujarathi beat Georgian GM Tornike Sanikidze to take his tally to eight points and tied for the third spot with IM Mozharov Mikhail of Russia, who defeated Grandmaster Samvel Ter-Sahakyan of Armenia to achieve his Grandmaster Norm in the final round. Better tie-break score favoured the Indian, who settled for the second runner-up trophy .

Sethu was richer by Rs. 2 lakh while Popov took home the runners-up's purse of Rs. 1.5 lakh. Vidit was awarded a check for Rs. 1.25 lakh.
