Driver first accused in Thekkady boat tragedy

Four years after the Thekkady boat tragedy which claimed the life of 45 tourists on September 30, 2009.

Kottayam: Four years after the Thekkady boat tragedy which claimed the life of 45 tourists on September 30, 2009, the economic offences wing of the Crime Branch submitted a chargesheet at the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-2 in Peerumedu on Tuesday.

The first accused in the case is Victor Samuel, driver of the KTDC-owned Jalakanyaka boat, which capsized.

The second to seventh accused respectively are: Aneesh, Lascar of the boat, Mathews, former chief inspector of the boat, Prakash, forest watcher, N.A. Giri, owner of the Vignesh marine company which manufactured the boat, K.K. Sanjeev, senior surveyor, and Manoj Mathew, deputy manager, mechanical, KTDC.

The Crime Branch has charged the accused with culpable homicide and causing the accident with wilful negligence. The investigation was conducted by a team comprising P.A. Valsan, SP, IR Battalion.
