Thiruvananthapuram: Two Assamese have been arrested in connection with the rape of a Bangalore-based IT professional at a leading resort at Poovar, about 30 km from here.

The two were workers of a pest control and cleaning firm engaged by the resort. They were identified as Lakhi Nath, 20, of Sonwalkachara in Jorhat district and Presona Gam, 22, of Thungari of the same district.

“The two have confessed to the crime and there were marks of the victim’s nails on the accused. Also, parts of a bracelet belonging to Lakhi Nath were recovered from the crime spot,” said Thiruvananthapuram rural SP A.J. Thomas Kutty.

The male hair strands recovered from the spot were sent for forensic examination to compare with the DNA of the accused.

The victim, a 40-year-old woman hailing from West Bengal, is also expected to come down to the city soon to identify the accused.

They would be charged under IPC 376 (D) for gangrape, said Neyyattinkara DySP Y.R. Restum, who headed the probe.

According to the police, the two were employed by Kottayam-based Crows Pest Management firm.

Lakhi was working at the resort for the last two months and Presona was there for nearly two years.

The victim, who was among a 30-member team from the IT firm, checked in at the resort at noon on November 27.

The Assamese youth had noticed her alone in the room.

Subsequently, they loosened the screw of the hinges of the balcony door of the room during the cleaning process.

The duo attempted to enter the room around 1 a.m. on November 28. However, the victim woke up hearing the sound.

Hence, they hid on the balcony till around 2.30 a.m. After entering the room, they overpowered her and Lakhi raped her while Presona held her tightly.

The two fled as the woman screamed and kicked Lakhi.

Though the police earlier suspected two other resort staff members, their DNA did not match with that of the hair strands recovered from the spot.

Bank robbers caught

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police has solved the case of the Mahesh Bank robbery, one of the biggest bank heists to have occurred in the city. The gold appraiser of the same bank, who looted 15 kg of gold from the bank’s strong room four days ago, has been arrested.

The appraiser, M. Brahmachari, 50, planned and carried out the heist after duplicating nine keys of the bank lockers and doors. He opened the nine locks, broke open the final grill door lock with a cutting machine, and carried out the gold in a bag. The operation was carried out by Brahmachari alone and was recorded on the CCTV cameras installed in the bank.

Police arrested his wife and son, M. Lalitha, 45, and son, M. Veda Virat, 21, who supported him and helped him to conceal the stolen property.

The police has also arrested the watchman of the bank, Ramulu, and senior accountant Shivashankar, whose negligence allowed Brahmachari to commit the offence.

The police traced Brahmachari from various clues and the CCTV footage. Some 14.5 kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 4.5 crore was recovered from the house of Brahmachari’s sister in Nalgonda district.

The police is investigating higher officials of the bank too, including its general manager, for negligence.

“The security of the bank is very weak and without standard safety measures. The ornaments were kept in common almirahs inside the strong room. The officials who keep the master keys behaved irresponsibly when it comes to the security of the bank. We are initiating action against the staff following complaints from the customers. After seeking legal opinion, a case might be booked against them,” said Cyberabad commissioner C.V. Anand.

The commissioner said that Brahmachari duplicated the keys by imprinting them on wax.

“He took seven keys from the watchman and printed them on wax paper. He took the other three keys from the senior accountant’s desk, when he had gone for lunch. Brahmachari, who is also a goldsmith, made two keys himself and got others made by a key maker,” added the police commissioner.

Their travel was cancelled and while the officials were taking them to the customs office in the arrival area, the two slipped and escaped, officials said.

Custom officials, in possession of their passports, called their homes and friends and informed them that the case won’t be serious and it would be better if they turned themselves in. After 12 hours, the two of them surrendered at the airport and were handed over to wildlife officials.
