State basketball championship begins

Ernakulam and Palakkad in the men's and women's section respectively will be looking to defend their titles in the upcoming state basketball championship in Thrissur.
The 58 th all-Kerala state basketball championship will be organised by the state association from December 3 to 8 at Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur. Some of the matches will also be held at Municipal Stadium.
The championship will prove a prelude to the senior national basketball championship, slated to be held in New Delhi in the last week of February. Players to represent Kerala at the senior nationals will be selected on the basis of their performance in the state championship.

Teams from 14 districts from the state will vie for the honours in men’s section and 12 districts will battle it out for the women’s title. The six-day championship will feature 47 matches. The tournament will be held on a league-cum knock-out basis.

A ‘Referee’s Clinic’ will be set up to familiarise the players with the newly implemented laws of the championship.

International referee Fr Philips Vadakeekalam, Chairman of Technical Commission (Kerala), will lead the clinic on the venue from 1 p.m. on December 4.

The clinic will be followed by a test for aspiring referees on December 6.

Ernakulam and Palakkad are the defending champions in the men’s and women’s category respectively. Ernakulam will continue to be the favourites in the men’s section as the team includes international players Basil Philip, Eudric Perera, Monish Wilson and R.Manoj.

In the women’s section, favourites will be Thiruvananthapuram as they are fielding players from Kerala State Electricity Board including Jeena P.S. and Stephy Nixon.
