Poor track conditions greets athletes

Bengaluru: Some things never change in Karnataka sport. Primary among them is the poor attitude towards infrastructure. On the eve of the Junior National Athletics Championship here, the Sree Kanteerava stadium resembled a poor picture which only highlighted administrative apathy.

An event which is supposed to serve as a talentspotting exercise needs better facilities than what the landmark venue boosts off.

The five-day event will be conducted at a venue which is far from conducive for competition.

Unkempt track, unfin ished long jump pits and grass that hasn't seen a mower in a long while, greeted the athletes. The grass which could hamper the performances of javelin throwers was being trimmed, given the shortage of time and fading light the possibility of it being competition ready looks difficult.

The sanitation for the athletes who are in excess of 1800 too was far from satisfactory.

Chandrashekar Rai, secretary of Karnataka Athletics Association said although they had request the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports for the renovation of the stadium for the meet, they never got down to business.
