Protesting farmers caned in Raichur
Raichur: Several farmers, a pregnant woman and four police personnel including a woman constable, sustained injuries when policemen caned farmers staging a protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Monday.
Farmers under the banner of Karnataka Raitha Sangha were staging a protest in front of the DC’s office, demanding issue of land rights for government land being cultivated by landless farmers, legal action against illegal stone quarrying in forest land in Manvi taluk, and a CBI inquiry into sale of cyanide-ash by Hutti Gold Mines Limited.
When no officer arrived to accept their memorandum, the farmers rushed to picket the deputy commissioner’s office around 2 pm.
At this juncture, they were caned by policemen. Several farmers, DySP M. Pasha, circle inspector Chandrashekhar, two constables and others sustained injuries in the clash.
About 30 people including KRS president Manasaiah, farmers’ leaders D.H. Pujar, Rajashekhar Sultanpur and others were taken away in a police van.
