Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail project is being designed as a disabled-friendly transport system. Metro stations are designed to provide barrier-free environment for the physically challenged.

Ramps will be provided at the road level of Metro stations to facilitate wheelchair movement up to the lifts and vice-versa.

Lifts will have handrails for the aid of physically challenged and elderly people. The height of the buttons in lifts, fare gates, ticket vending machines etc., are designed to enable easy access for the physically challenged.

Lift buttons will have information in Braille at all levels of the stations to help the visually challenged. Ticket Vending Machines are also designed to aid the passengers with speech impairment.

Addressing a press conference to mark the occasion of World Disability Day on December 3, HMR managing director N.V.S Reddy said, “A tactile strip will be provided throughout the stations so that blind persons can board trains on their own.

The gap between the platform and train floor will be maintained keeping in mind the needs of the disabled. Special toilets will be provided for the disabled at each station.

Pictograms along with signage will facilitate not only people with disabilities but also the illiterate to easily access different areas of the stations and trains.”

HMR is organising an “Awareness Walk for Disabled Persons” at Necklace Road at 7 am on Tuesday to mark the World Disability Day.
