The National Silent Fest organised in Kochi witnessed a surge of creativity from hearing-impaired students. Undeterred by their handicap, more than a hundred of them from different parts of the country came to Kochi to showcase their talent and proved that they are not lesser to anybody when it comes to creativity and talent. National Silent Fest is organised by All India Association of the Deaf that aims to help people with hearing loss.
“These groups of people are normally cut off from society because of the communication barrier. There should be a way to help them express their views and opinions. Through this association, we are trying to help them move ahead and face life with confidence," says Nizaar, chairman of the association.
The Association has 24 branches across the country.
The National Silent Fest is an annual cultural fest that showcases their talent in art and drama. “The fest is similar to youth festivals. In previous years, it was conducted in Bombay and Pune and this year we decided to conduct it here," says Nizaar.
The fest includes dance, drama and mime.
“Such fests offer them a platform to show off their skills and express their views. We are showing them the way to mix with people in a normal manner."
Interestingly, the association also organises a Miss India contest for people with hearing impairment. “There are many among them who want to get into modelling. We help them develop their skills accordingly. The next contest will be held next year in New Delhi."
