Militants attack police patrol party in Kashmir, SHO killed

Armed with AK assault rifles, militants open fire on police patrol party; 3 others injured.

Srinagar: In a major strike, militants on Monday attacked a police patrol party in Budgam district of Kashmir Valley, killing an officer and injuring three others, including two cops.

Armed with AK assault rifles, a group of unidentified militants opened indiscriminate fire on the police party led by a Station House Officer (SHO) at busy Chadoora chowk, 16 kms from here, this afternoon, a police spokesman said.

Three policemen - SHO Chadoora Sub-Inspector Shabir Ahmad, constable Mohammad Shafi and SPO Firdous Ahmad - were injured in the militant firing along with a shopkeeper Ghulam Mohammad.

The injured were immediately evacuated to hospital, where the officer who had received a burst of gunfire in the chest succumbed to his wounds, the spokesman said, adding a massive hunt has been launched to nab the attackers.

No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack took place shortly after the police party left the nearby police station for patrolling, police sources said, adding the ultras escaped from the scene, taking advantage of panic which followed the firing.
