Chimps, bat-eared foxes add charm to Mysore zoo
Two chimpanzees and four bat-eared foxes arrives at the Mysore zoo from Singapore Zoological Gardens.
Mysore: Two chimpanzees and four bat-eared foxes arrived at the Mysore zoo from Singapore Zoological Gardens on Sunday morning. The two chimpanzees, six year old Kimoni and 11 year old Nkosi, will join two female chimps, 23 year old Mason and 24 year old Mirella, and two other males. The female chimps were received from Sweden in 1994.
The chimpanzees will be kept under quarantine for 30 days, before they are exhibited to the public. Markalee bin Aziz, a senior keeper of chimpanzees at the Singapore Zoo, has accompanied the animals. “He will be here for five days and will guide our staff on care, management, feeding and housing aspects of the chimps,” said Mysore Zoo Executive Director B.P. Ravi. While the Mysore zoo has not bred chimpanzees in the past, Nkosi and Kimoni may brighten the prospects, he said.
It is for the first time that the Mysore zoo will display bat-eared foxes among its collection of 1,400 animals.
The Singapore zoo has also sent two meer cats as part of the exchange programme that was agreed upon in November 2011.
A memorandum of understanding was signed on February, 17, 2012. The Mysore zoo will send a male and female sloth bears, a lion-tailed macaque and a male and female emus.
“Animal exchange with foreign zoos is a long and cumbersome process. The Mysore zoo sent a sloth bear and lion-tailed macaque to Singapore Zoo on October 20, 2012. The animals are doing well there,” said Ravi.
