Batting lets Kerala down

Middle-order collapse gifts first innings lead to J&K on third day.

Kochi: A clumsy Kerala middle order threw away six wickets for just 24 runs as the visitors conceded a crucial first innings lead to Jammu & Kashmir, letting down centurion V.A.

Jagadeesh on the third day of their Ranji Trophy Group ‘C’ match at Jammu on Saturday.

The opener had painstakingly constructed his seventh first-class century, and after Rohan Prem’s departure for 86, Kerala collapsed from a promising 278 for 4 to being bowled out for 302 on the third day.

Samiullah Beigh ripped through the lower order to finish with four wickets while Ram Dayal and Mohammed Mudhasir bagged two apiece to hand a 75-run lead to their side.

Adil Rishi had played with attacking intent to garner 68 runs off just 80 deliveries, giving J&K a lead of 186 runs at stumps. The hosts have nine wickets in hand, and if they get at least two full sessions on the final day, Kerala face the prospect of returning with a solitary point or worse, face defeat.

Jagadeesh and Rohan had got the Kerala innings off smoothly from an overnight 182 for 4 and raised a 134-run partnership before the former fell victim to Waseem Raja.

Rohan and Robert Fernandez seemed to be in a mood to build on the good work, but Ram Dayal cut short Kerala’ fantasy dismissing the two in successive overs. BRIEF SCORES GROUP A Haryana 163 & 155 lost to 184 and 135/7 in 45 overs (Sandeep Sharma 37 not out, Gurkeerat Singh 37, Mohit Sharma 3/38).
