Kochi Metro: Casting yard works hit again following protest
Kochi: Kochi Metro construction work at the FACT-owned land in Eloor was disrupted on Saturday after local people objected to frequent plying of vehicles carrying materials to the construction site.
This is the sixth time that the work at casting yards, especially at HMT Kalamassery, has been disrupted due to various reasons like labour issue, demand for more share of work by different labour unions and objection by local people among others.
“When we started the works today morning, the Eloor ‘paura samithi objected to the plying of vehicles. They demanded that we should find another path citing danger posed by the vehicles through the narrow road. They are also objecting to cutting of trees to make an alternative path,” said a top metro official.
He said a memorandum would be submitted to the district collector to bring the issue to his notice. Contractor for the work, Soma Constructions, has temporarily suspended all construction activities.
On Thursday, a high-level KMRL team conducted an extensive inspection along Metro routes and yards in a first of its kind major review.

Kochi: Pipe-shifting works to facilitate Kochi Metro construction activities at the Kadavantra and Elamkulam areas along the SA Road would get into full swing from Monday when both sides of the stretch would be dug up.
“Currently work is done at only one side. We plan to complete the work in the stretch before December 20 when the metro authorities will start their activities. All the pipelines will be shifted so that they won’t get damaged during metro piling works,” said Jayan Raj, KWA officer in charge.
The KWA drew much flak for delay in the utility shifting process after it failed to find a contractor to carry out the work. Finally a KWA wing took up the pipe relocation works a week back.
Already the relocation works have resulted in traffic jams at the Kadavantra Junction. Traffic police has advised commuters to skip the junction to avoid inordinate delays.
