CBI likely to let Amit off hook in Ishrat case
New Delhi: The CBI, which has completed its probe into the conspiracy that led to the encounter killing of Ishrat Jahan and three others on June 15, 2004, is unlikely to mention the name of Amit Shah, senior BJP leader and a close aide of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, in its supplementary chargesheet in view of the lack of evidence against him.
The agency, which will also not mention anything about the antecedents of the Mumbai-based teenager, will keep the probe open to ascertain the role of state-level politicians in the conspiracy if any, sources said.
The agency sleuths are expected to file the supplementary chargesheet anytime after December 2. “The findings of the documents provided by the ministry of home affairs and the analysis of the conduct of the suspected IB officials before and after the encounter will be a crucial part of the supplementary probe report,” sources said.
Ishrat, along with three others, Javed Sheikh, alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali Akbarali Rana and Jishan Johar, was killed in a fake encounter near Ahmedabad.
“The agency has evidence which proves that she was abducted by the Gujarat police from Vasad toll booth and the suspected IB officers had information about this,” sources said.
The CBI has also completed its investigations into the conspiracy that led to the encounter death of Sadiq Jamal Mehtar on January 13, 2003, and will elaborate the role of two former officials of the IB in the abduction of the victim (before the shooting) in its supplementary chargesheet.
