BU brings down number of BEd colleges to 49 from 98
Bangalore University (BU) to reduce number of B.Ed colleges due to poor facilities and rampant malpractices.
Bangalore: Following the public outrage at the poor facilities and rampant malpractices in B.Ed colleges affiliated to Bangalore University (BU), the university has decided not to continue the affiliation of such colleges. As a result, in the academic year 2013-14, only 49 colleges will be allowed to admit students. Another 49 colleges were prohibited from admitting students.
It may be recalled that recently the centralised admission cell kick-started the B.Ed admission process for the academic year 2013-14. In the first phase, BU had sent a list of 39 colleges for the seat allotment. Now it has decided to forward the names of another 10 colleges.
On Saturday, the BU academic council which met to discuss the affiliation of 30 colleges, decided to grant affiliation to only 10 colleges. Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) reports pertaining to these 30 colleges were discussed. Even though the LIC committee heads had recommended that permission be given to some colleges that lack infrastructure and other facilities, committee members opposed this, saying it will set a bad precedent.
After heated arguments, it was decided to give permission to only the 10 colleges that have the necessary infrastructure and facilities. It was decided to issue show-cause notices to the other 20 colleges.
Vice chancellor Prof. B. Thimmegowda, who preÂsided over the meeting, announced that the namÂes of only 10 colleges will be forwarded to the CenÂtralised Admission ComÂmittee for admission. “But if colleges knock on the door of the court or state government and get an order for re-inspection, we must be bound by such orders,” he said.
It was also decided at the meeting to endorse the integrated course structure launched by the university a few years ago. BU should have started these courses after receiving permission from the state government. As BU didn’t forward the proposal before starting the courses, the government rejected them. As per the government’s direction the BU has forwarded the proposal again with the approval of the academic council.
