Omandurar hospital to sport green features
Multi super specialty hospital Omandurar Estate to sport green features.
Chennai: The multi super specialty hospital under construction on Omandurar Estate could certainly be corporate hospitals’ envy. Kudos to the buildings wing of the state PWD, the sprawling structure, originally designed to be the seat of power, has transformed in to a hub of medicare at a cost of Rs 26 crore.
A quick tour in the 10 lakh square feet structure, particularly the work being done and facilities proposed there would explain the transformation the building would go through and what it has in store for the people once opened.
For instance, the multi super specialty hospital would stand out from the rest of the hospitals for the sheer number of toilets it has. Yes! About 500 toilets have been constructed to meet the demand of a 2,000 and odd floating population plus the 500 in patients.
Medical wonders would be happening right behind the towering row of metal, glass sheets and concrete in a while. For instance, the floors above the long row of stairs that lead to the public plaza, a circular structure overlooking Anna Salai, would be teeming with surgical activity.
Ten of the 14 operation theaters (OT) would be around public plaza. Though a sump with a motor running 24x7 had been constructed right beneath the public plaza to supply 0.3 mld (three lakh liters per day) to the hospital, an exclusive conventional overhead tank has been constructed directly above the plaza to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the OTs.
Interestingly, the engineers have managed to retain the eco-friendly nature of the building despite the conversion in to a hospital. About 1.4 lakh liters of the 3 lakh liters consumed daily would be recycled and used for gardening and flushing toilets. Ironically, the fully air-conditioned hospital would lack something that all buildings have — fans.
What appears to passersby as a dull yellow perforated sheet of metal covering the exterior of the building is nothing power saver. An engineer involved in the project explains, “The sheets will repel heat from the sun and keep the temperature in the AC interior in tact. It’s easy to bring the temperature to 30 degree from 36 degree instead of 40 degree. The sheets will help reduce energy consumption that way.”
