More traffic wardens at Kochi Metro work sites
Kochi: The authorities concerned have decided to deploy traffic wardens at the barricade openings at Metro work sites. This is being done for the safety of vehicles and the wardens will man these sites round the clock.
“We have decided to regulate vehicular traffic at these points so as to prevent the intermittent entry of men and machines to the main road through these openings,” said Jayakumar, CI, (Traffic) East Station.
The wardens will be given special training in identifying the problems of each of these locations so that they will be able to handle situations accordingly.
According to officials, vehicles regularly dart through these corridors in the face of oncoming traffic and this has led to huge traffic snarls.
Meanwhile, Metro officials said more workers would be deployed at these gaps to assist the traffic wardens.
“Special instructions have been given to contractor agencies to check their workers from venturing onto the roads by showing scant regard for the traffic’’, they said.
Further, they also emphasized the need for putting up huge display boards at the entry points of the works sites. “These would serve as sign boards to motorists including Ayyappa pilgrims coming from far off places’’, they pointed out.
Last week, a 27-year-old youngster, Vineeth V.Nair of Irinjalakkuda died when he veered off his two-wheeler to save a Metro worker.
