Conductor's son becomes new APSRTC MD
Whatever I am today, it is because of my father, says Additional DGP Puranchandra Rao.
Hyderabad: J. Purnachander Rao, the former additional DGP who took charge as the vice chairperson and managing director of APSRTC on Saturday, shares a history with the corporation.
Speaking to mediapersons, Rao revealed, “My father Radhakrishna was a conductor in the RTC. He had struggled a lot to ensure that I get a good education. Today, whatever I am is because of my father. I will work hard for the betterment of this corporation. It is a proud day for me.”
Rao replaces another IPS officer, A.K. Khan, at APSRTC. Khan is moving to the Anti-Corruption Bureau as its director general.
Meanwhile, APSRTC plans to open tenders to buy chassis and build its own sturdy buses that are suitable for Indian road conditions under JNNURM.
Not only will this increase the lifespan of the buses by four to five years, the cost component is also expected to come down by 15 to 20 per cent.
APSRTC’s outgoing vicechairman and MD A.K. Khan, handing over the charge to Rao, said, “The RAP has been prepared and new tenders will be floated soon. This time, we have taken into consideration all the difficulties we had faced in the earlier lot of buses. The three main problems are the cost factor, suitability of the buses on city roads and the mechanical specifications. This time, we are going to get only the chassis.... the buses will be built by APSRTC.”
Nearly 1,500 buses are to be rolled out by APSRTC by March 2014 under JNNURM, reducing the cost by a minimum of 20 per cent.
The new tenders of Rs 450 crore will be floated by the end of the month.
