Oommen Chandy takes stock of mass contact

Grama sabhas may select beneficiaries.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday said the government was considering entrusting grama sabhas with the task of recommending beneficiaries for various welfare schemes of the state and central governments.

In a video conference with collectors of eight districts where his mass contact programmes have been completed, Chandy said grama sabhas knew the pulse of the local people and they were in a better position to identify beneficiaries and recommend their names.

Most beneficiaries were not aware of these programmes and hence the government would soon publish a booklet giving details of the central and state government schemes, he added.

He directed the collectors to implement within two weeks the decisions taken on the applications received online at the mass contact programmes. He asked them to hold adalats at the district and taluk level to deal with the thousands of complaints received at the programmes.

Chandy said a comprehensive scheme for the rehabilitation of the HIV-affected families would be implemented soon. District collectors of Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram where the mass contact programmes are over, participated in the video conferencing.
