Transport corporation denies jobs to Hyd-karnataka candidates
NEKRTC ignores special status of the Hyderabad Karnataka region, denies job to candidates.
Gulbarga: The North Eastern Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) , which had put off the appointment of 1,000 drivers and conductors until Article 371(J) of the Constitution giving special status to the Hyderabad Karnataka region came into force, seems to be ignoring it.
The corporation, which had kept its notification of December 2012 appointing the conductors and drivers in abeyance following protests, is now going ahead with recruiting them based on a recent order of the state transport department permitting it to stick with the old notification.
In the process it is ignoring the recommendation of the cabinet sub-committee headed by H.K. Patil that 80 per cent of the posts of conductors and drivers should go to candidates from the H-K region.
NEKRTC Managing Director, G.N. Shivamurthy, when contacted, explained that the candidates already selected under the old notification were being appointed in view of the acute shortage of staff. "The shortage of staff is not only hampering our services but also cutting into revenue. As the transport sector comes under the essential services category, we have been exempted from following Article 371 for the time being," he said.
Asked about jobs being denied to candidates from the H-K region, Shivamurthy said as it would take eight to ten months for the government to frame rules under Article 371(J) and the corporation could not wait that long to fill up posts.
He, however, assured that recruitment would be made shortly for another 1,000 posts and the candidates of H-K region would then be considered. "We will try to safeguard the interests of H-K region candidates when making these appointments," he promised.
