Police want tenants’ details from landlords
Chennai police asks landlords provide details of their tenants for security.
Chennai: The city police have asked landlords in Chennai to provide details of their tenants to the local police station, starting December 1.
“It is the landlord’s responsibility to do so,” city Police Commissioner S. George told reporters on Thursday. This is the second time that the city police are pressing for a tenant directory after the suggestion was stayed by the Madras High Court in April 2011.
“The legal hassles are over and we will start the verification process of tenants through the landlord from December 1,” the Commissioner said. The police tried to collect data immediately after the Velachery encounter in Feburary 2012 in which five bank robbery suspects were killed.
They had said then that it would have been easier for them to track the criminals if the landlords had verified their backgrounds. He also cited the case of four men from Tripura, alleged gang rape suspects, who had been staying in Taramani for the last three weeks, as an example of people with criminal backgrounds hiding in Chennai.
“We are not interested in the kind of agreement or lease details you have with your tenants. We just want their personal details and previous address to make sure that they have no criminal records,” the official added. The city police chief said that the data collected would be treated as confidential.
The police also noted that the landlords would be given 60 days’ time from December 1 to furnish the details at the local police station and those who failed to do so would face legal action. The verification form can be downloaded from the Tamil Nadu website.
