Chennai: The state government on Thursday informed the Madras HC that it was prepared to ‘consider’ taking over the DD Medical College and Hospital in Tiruvallur district, without any liability, if the court issues a direction.
Advocate general A.L Somayaji made his submission before Justice K. K. Sasidharan when the petitions from students and welfare association of the college, seeking a direction to the state government to take over and administer the college came up for hearing. Another petition filed by the college management challenging a Medical Council of India order dated October 14 on student admission was also a part of the batch.
While reserving orders in the matter, Justice K. K. Sasidharan said, “Advocate general has submitted that the state government is prepared to consider taking over DD medical college, provided the assets and liabilities of the institution are disclosed. The advocate general made a further statement that in case this court directs the state government to take over the institution, the government is prepared to take over the institution without any liability.”
Senior counsel V Prakash, appearing for the college submitted that the issue of takeover of the college was now pending before the Supreme Court.
However, senior counsel Nalini Chidambaram, appearing for students, submitted that no such SLP was pending in the apex court as it had already granted liberty to the students to move the high court for take over of the institution and she would circulate the apex court order on Nov. 29.
