December deadline for Metro land quota

Pareeth promises to speed up process.

Kochi: Land acquisition for the two major infra projects of the city, Metro Rail and Edappally flyover, is underway and acquisition for the former will be completed by December.

Talking to mediapersons after a review meeting of Kochi Metro Rail, district collector P.I.Sheikh Pareeth said land acquisition for widening the Vyttila - Pettah Road and Edappally flyover was progressing.

“Discussions with land owners in Edappally will be completed by next month. Acquisition for metro stations along the Vyttila - Pettah stretch is over and a few more plots need to be acquired for widening the road to 26 metres”, said the District Collector.

More traffic wardens to be appointed

During the high-level review meeting attended by managing director of Kochi Metro Rail Limited, Elias George, IG Padmakumar and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation project director P.Sreeram and other officials, it was decided to appoint 110 new wardens for traffic regulations in the city. They will be put on night duty also.

At present, 50 wardens have been appointed. The police authorities have decided to make traffic regulations stricter in view of the recent accidents which occurred near Metro Rail construction sites.
“Traffic regulations are planned in such a way that very little inconvenience caused to the public. Strict action will be taken for reckless driving and speeding,” said the IG.

Suspension of toll at Pullepady bridge sought

The KMRL will write to the State Government to defer the toll at the Thammanam - Pullepady bridge till the civil works of Metro are complete as it is the major alternative route for traffic diversion.

The KMRL MD said the barricades in Pulinchodu and Changampuzha Park would be removed by the end of December as soon as the work along the stretch was completed.
