Be humble, sincere: Karat tells cadres

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Wednesday asked party leaders and workers to shed.

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Wednesday asked party leaders and workers to shed arrogance and be humble before the people.

Inaugurating the three-day special plenum of the party in Palakkad, Karat said: “The leading cadre of the party are present here and you must always remember we have to be humble before the people.

We have to show our sincerity and devotion while we work with the people. We must eschew all un-communist virtues, bureaucratism, factionalism, arrogance, extravagant lifestyle and any type of malpractices which are alien to the norms of being a communist.’’

From July, the Communist Party of China has decided to conduct a one-year mass campaign for rectification of the party at all levels, he said. “We are not a big party like the Chinese party. But in Kerala, we are in a unique position.

We have a huge mass base, we often come into state government and we also hold public institutions,’’ he said and added that self-critical analysis of work was important to initiate corrective steps.

Later, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan placed the 150-page document on organisational issues in three parts. It was pointed out that degeneration had affected the party at all levels and the main cause was factionalism.

The document referred to the social evils that had crept into the cadre and leaders, particularly problems like alcoholism and nexus with land, sand and quarry mafia.

The plenum is likely to come out with stringent criteria to ensure that the membership of such shady characters is not renewed at the time of conferences.
