Charly is a 20-year-old French national, while Weyand (26) hails from Germany. Both young men, who were under the influence of alcohol, attempted to gatecrash a private party at Shiro, UB City.

“The party was being thrown by Jagadish M Monda and his family,” said a police officer. “The accused wanted to join the dancing and when they tried to enter, the organisers told them it was a private party and that they needed an invitation to enter.” The students began arguing with the organisers, who called in the hotel management, who also refused them entry.

The argument soon turned into a physical brawl, said police. “The restaurant called the police, who arrived soon and tried to pacify the students,” said the official. When the cops tried to intervene, the accused turned on them, too. “They picked up an argument and physically assaulted the policemen, causing them bodily harm,” stated the FIR filed by Jagadish Monda.

“We have to proceed with caution,” said the senior police officer, on condition of annonymity. “Diplomacy is the most important thing here, we don't want to be accused of racism,” he added.

The French and German embassies have both been alerted and the accused have been asked not to leave the country until the investigation is over. “The Indian Institute of Science should get involved, but we can't tell them what to do,” he said.

Felix Weyand is here for a short term project at the Materials Engineering Department, IISc, while Charly is a short-term registrar at the Civil Engineering Department.

Meanwhile, back at the Institute, little is known about the matter, which took place several kilometres off campus. “Both students are very young and they're both foreigners too. I don't think they understoodd the consequences of their actions We don't have all the details of the case exactly, because this is more a matter for the police than for the Institute" said Professor Balaram, Director, Indian Institute of Science.

“We don't keep tabs on students who go off campus, but I think the law will proceed as it must. They will have to undergo some hardship now, because of what they have done,” he stated.
