A ‘Kriya’ of kindness...

Kavya Prakash has been instrumental in starting the non-profit organisation Kriya

Today’s youth have often been accused of being addicted to social media and spending most of their time with their virtual friends, rather than family and friends. But Kavya Prakash, filmmaker V. K. Prakash’s daughter, chose to use social media in a constructive way. Kavya has been instrumental in starting the non-profit organisation Kriya, which works for the benefit of orphanages, old age homes and animal shelters. She took to social media to drum up support for it.

Kavya had the brainwave to start this organisation on one of her professional assignments as a photographer. She says, “I had gone for a photoshoot to a poorly-maintained orphanage in Bengaluru. This visit set the wheels in motion to create a difference in the lives of the underprivileged. My organisation will also work for the betterment of animal shelters.”

Kavya instantly took to the social media to sound out her vision and gather support for her work. The response she got was great and unexpected. She also got the support of friends like Nimmy, Vikram and Shomprakash Sinha who is an author and core members of her group.

Talking about the reaction of her parents, Kavya says with a laugh, “I put up my post with my intentions around 3 am and the first person to like and share it on his page was my father! They’ve been very supportive.” She is also happy with the support offered by the film fraternity with Unni Mukundan sharing her page and Fahadh Faasil also appreciating her work.

Kriya regularly organises workshops, photography classes and more.
