PSBB on a roll
Chennai: PSBB, KK Nagar, school football team have raised the bar of excellence by winning the South United football championship held recently.
In what turned out to be a humdinger of a final against Lakshmi School, Madurai, PSBB eventually prevailed in a tense penalty shoot-out. The tournament, being held for the first time, was conducted by former India striker Raman Vijayan. With their latest triumph PSBB, according to their coach S. Shivaji, have won an astounding 56 trophies in a nine year span.
This is the most that any team have won during that period and on the back of their impressive trophy-winning run PSBB can assuredly lay claim to being the best school team in the city by some distance.
The credit for such a phenomenal success rate should undoubtedly be given to their vastly experienced coach Shivaji who has been the mastermind of a string of triumphs. In fact the 37-year old Shivaji earned his stripes as a robust defender during his playing days and enjoyed a rewarding career which lasted nearly a decade.
He had played for Netaji Sports for Netaji Sport Club for two years before moving to Central Excise in the senior division league where he estab lished a reputation for being a tough as nails stopper.
It would be quite safe to say then that he has seamlessly fitted into the role of mentoring as is reflected in his team's purple patch. He has passed on the years of wisdom he gained as a player to his receptive wards, who have benefitted a great deal by having him as their coach.
“After retiring as a player I took to coaching and soon acquired an AFC 'C' licence as coach. I must thank the school management for providing topnotch amenities to the children and allowing them to get a much needed exposure to stiff compe tition prevailing in Chennai. To have won so many trophies is a testament to the emphasis the school places on sports,“ mentions Shivaji.
Under his tutelage three of the brightest talents in PSBB have had the honour of representing the Tamil Nadu U-13 team. “K. Shashank, V . Sivaprasad and N. Anirudh Kumar had done the school proud by getting selected for the state U-13 team. Of those three Anirudh was blessed with the unique opportunity of visiting Manchester United as a trainee. That experience did him a world of good,“ says the genial Shivaji.

Top seed Jeevan Nedunchezhian recorded his 50th singles win of the season on the ITF circuit when he trounced wild card Prateek Pushkar Baxi 6-0 6-0 while second seed N Sriram Balaji battled past Chandril Sood 6-4 3-6 6-2 in the $10,000 Futures tournament on Tuesday.
Prateek had a break point in the very first game but that was the only good time he enjoyed in the contest. Left-handed Jeevan saved that break chance with an ace and never looked back from there, handing the new-entrant a tough lesson in his first outing.
