Heroic Pawan fetches BFC first away win

Bangalore: Goalkeeper Pawan Kumar was the hero as Bengaluru FC broke their away jinx in splendid fashion with a nerve-wracking 2-1 victory over a formidable Salgaocar in their Ileague encounter, here on Tuesday .

In an exciting match where tempers flared up, the Blues pocketed their first full points in an away game at the Duler stadium with Pawan parrying away Darryl Duffy's spot-kick. With Sean Rooney missing the game against his former club owing to a sore calf, Bengaluru FC started with Robin Singh up front.

Going for the jugular from the start like they always do, Bengaluru FC's passing and quick runs posed searching questions for the local giants' defence. The breakthrough came in the 21st minute off a Bengaluru FC corner. Beikhokhei Beingaichho played it close to Rino Anto who in turn, set it up for John Menyongar to calmly curl home past ’keeper Karanjit Singh.

The visitors’ joy was short-lived as Salgaocar found an answer barely two minutes later and in spectacular fashion. Finding space and freedom 30 yards out, Gilbert Oliveira unleashed a scorcher that beat Pawan all ends up before smashing into the top corner on the right.

In the second session, Sunil Chhetri came close after Robin slid one in only to see the ball needle past the skipper and the Salgaocar ’keeper. Chhetri was at it again and in the 57th minute, began a brilliant move that gave Bengaluru the lead for a second time.

Shrugging off and squirming between two defenders on the left, Chhetri picked out Thoi Singh who slid one into the box for an onrushing Beikho to bundle home his first goal in the league. Tempers began to flare up when Menyongar was booked for bringing down Matthew Foschini. The Australian defender gave the midfielder a mouthful and Menyongar didn't take kindly to it.

Bengaluru survived some anxious moments towards the end where Salgaocar, using the flanks more, kept sending in crosses that were either dealt with by Pawan or went abegging.

However, just as Bengaluru thought they had the match in the bag, Salgaocar were awarded an injurytime penalty after John Johnson was claimed to have brought down Darryl Duffy . The Scottish striker stepped up to take the kick only for Pawan to bring off a super save, making it three out of three penalty saves in the League.

RESULTS: Salgaocar 1 (Gilbert 23) lost to Bengaluru FC 2 (Menyongar 21, Beikhokhei 57)
