Sivaji Ganesan statue has to be shifted: Cops to HC

Police affidavit says statue obstructing view of motorists, causing mishaps.

Chennai: The Chennai city police has in an affidavit filed before the Madras high court supported the idea of moving the statue of late movie icon, Sivaji Ganesan, to the Marina beach front, saying it is obstructing the view of motorists and causing accidents at its present location at the Kamarajar Salai-Radhakrishnan Salai junction.

Recalling that 12 accidents, one of which was fatal, took place at the spot in 2012 and eight accidents have been reported at the junction so far this year, K Soundararajan, additional deputy commissioner of police, armed reserve, who is in-charge assistant commissioner of police, traffic, Mylapore, said the statue would be better placed at the Marina Beach front, where it would have no such impact on traffic.

The court, which was hearing a petition filed by one by P. Nagarajan for shifting of the statue on grounds that it obstructed the view of motorists taking a right turn to Radhakrishnan Salai, had on October 23 directed the traffic police to file an affidavit giving its views on the matter.

The hearing of the petition has been posted to December 13as the Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Samugha Nala Peravai, which is objecting to the statue being shifted, has sought time to implead itself in the case.
