Doctor to pay Rs 25L for deadly dose
Kochi: The permanent Lok Adalat on Tuesday ordered a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the kin of a woman, who died of medical negligence. The doctor had prescribed a wrong injection and the woman slipped into a coma and died after two years and three months of the incident.
The adalat directed Dr. M. Prabhakaran, medical specialty, Divine Medical Centre, Wadakkanchery , Thrissur, to pay the amount to V.O. David and Roger David, husband and son respectively of Margili.
The adalat bench comprising retired district judge D. Pappachan and Johns Darrel issued the order. Margili had consulted the doctor as she had symptoms of cold and fever. The doctor prescribed Hyzone-injection.
The duty nurse without giving any test dose injected the medicine and Margili immediately started vomiting and became unconscious. She didn’t respond to any treatments and she died on September 9, 2012.
The adalat observed that the standard medical protocol required the duty nurse to apply test dose before administering penicillin derivate drug. The doctor was vicariously liable for the negligence of their staff, the bench held.
