Cooptex on Facebook, to boost sales

Chennai: The familiar multi-hued butterfly symbol of the Cooptex has entered the Facebook hoping to make new inroads to promote its rich and vibrant tradition in handlooms and also to boost its sales.

The Tamilnadu Han­d­loom Weavers’ Co-operative Society, popularly known as Cooptex, has posted photos and videos on Facebook, even as its online trading introduced last year is fast cathcing up. Its export contribution was around Rs 3 crore. And for the first time in 13 years, the company came out of red during 2012-13 fiscal earning Rs 2 crore profit.

The state-owned organisation, with about 1,256 member societies and over two lakh weavers and 203 showrooms acro­ss the country, has earmarked Rs 2.50 crore for modernisation and expa­nsion of existing showrooms across the country. According to sources, as part of a goodwill gesture Cooptex has decided to share its profits with the weavers. On the cards is to enhance the wages for the weavers.

It is anticipating Rs 400 crore sales for 2013-14 fiscal as against Rs 245 crore in the previous year. Apart from TN where it has 130 outlets, the company has 19 stores in And­hra Pradesh, 14 in Karn­ataka, 10 in Kerala and 4 in Delhi, offering variety of products including silk and cotton saris, chudidaar and readymade shi­rts.

Some of its schemes like the Kanavu Nanavu (converting (your) dreams into reality) encouraging people to own its range of products through monthly installment scheme wh­ile waiving off the final installment has made Cooptex come more closer to the people.
