Hyderabad: A father allegedly sexually assaulted his 14-year-old daughter in Bolarum area here, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, aged around 45 years, sexually assaulted his daughter repeatedly over the past few months, they said based on a complaint lodged by representatives of an NGO, to whom the victim had approached.

Bolarum police registered a case under relevant sections of IPC against the man, whose identity was not revealed, citing further investigations

Chennai: The police have detained a sexagenarian man, who in a tussle with his wife, attempted to murder her by throwing a grinding stone at her on Tuesday in Pallavaram.

The woman, Krishnaveni, 53, escaped with minor injuries and is being treated at the Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital.

The man, Elumalai was said to be mentally unstable and was taking medications from the siddha hospital near Tambaram.

On Monday night, after his wife provided him with the medications, he felt a burning sensation and accused his wife of trying to poison him, the police said.

After a while, around 2 am on Tuesday, when she was asleep, he took the grinder stone and threw it at her. The stone missed the woman’s head by inches but injured her hand. The Pallavaram police have detained the man.

Man throws acid on 40-year-old woman

Khammam: A 40-year-old woman sustained burn injuries when a person threw acid on her on Tuesday.

According to reports, Nallagonda Pramila Devi, a resident of Thallampadu village, 12 km from Kham-mam, got off an autorickshaw at Mayuri Centre and started walking down the street to buy provisions.

She started to run when she came across Bojjagani Srinu, 45, whom she knew well, shouting in rage at her.

Srinu chased Pramila for a while before throwing acid at her and fled. The victim, who suffered burns on the back and neck, was rushed to a hospital and her condition is said to stable.

It is learnt that Srinu was nursing a grudge against Pramila after she had lodged a complaint against him with the rural police, a couple of months ago, following a dispute over financial matters.

However, the One-Town police are yet to ascertain the details.

Pramila is wife of Rajendra Prasad, a government teacher in Sathupalli. Search is on for Srinu.

Meanwhile, students led by Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika (TVV) took out a rally in the town and performed a human chain at Kalva voddu centre, in protest against the acid attack. TVV district vice-president Swathi demanded stringent action against the accused.

Conman who stole people in the garb of a holy man arrested

Hyderabad: A man who allegedly stole gold ornaments and cash from people after entering their houses by posing as a 'baba' has been arrested, the police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Kalyan Raju, a native of Kadapa district, used to wear a holy man's attire and enter victims' homes under the pretext of religious rituals to ward off their financial and other problems, the police said.

Believing him, people used to bring him cash and their valuables in their house as part of performing the rituals, after which the accused used to divert their attention and steal the cash and valuables, a police officer said.

Kalyan is suspected to have indulged in similar acts in different parts of the state and some women members of his family had also been allegedly assisting him, he said.

The police seized valuables worth Rs 6 lakh from Kalyan's possession after arresting him from Katedan area here on Tuesday.

A case under Section 379 (theft) and Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code was booked against him, the police said.

Chennai: A drunken auto driver climbed atop a mobile phone tower in Tiruvanmiyur and threatened to commit suicide on Tuesday after transport officials impounded his auto for not installing a meter.

According to the police, Jothi Lingam, 52, a resident of Thuraipakkam, climbed the tower at L.B. road aro­und 3 pm and shouted suicide threats.

Adyar police officials rushed to the spot and tried negotiating with the man to climb down. Soon, a crowd gathered around the spot and motorists who passed by also parked their vehicles to witness the drama, which resulted in a traffic jam on the road.

The auto driver kept repeating that his livelihood was in danger as the transport officials had seized his vehicle. In spite of the police assuring him that they would help get back his auto, he did not listen to them, an official said.

The police said Jothi Lingam’s auto was seized after a passenger had complained to the authorities that he was overcharging. An inspection by the transport department revealed that he did not even possess the necessary documents as he had pawned them with a financier.

On Tuesday, finally, the police sought the help of other auto drivers of his stand to help bring him down. The auto drivers spoke to him for about half-an-hour after which Jothi Lingam agreed to climb down the mobile phone tower, the police said.

But as he was drunk, police personnel climbed the tower and brought him down safely.

Hyderabad: A robber attacked a 52-year-old woman and decamped with a 450-gram gold chain at Jillalguda in Meerpet on Tuesday.

The man entered the house under the pretext of taking a room for rent and attacked the victim. The offender rode away on his bike before the victim could raise an alarm.

The incident occurred at around 12.30 pm at Sumitra Enclave, when K. Krishnaveni was alone in her house.

The offender introduced himself as a person working at the airport and asked if we were giving a portion of our house on rent. My mother let him inside and showed the portion for rent. He left saying he will come with his wife and brother-in-law,” said the victim’s son V. Srikant.

“After a few minutes, he returned and said his wife was on the way, and asked for a glass of water. When Krishnaveni gave him water, he snatched her chain and drove away on his bike,” he added.

Though my mother tried to resist, she was pushed back,” Srikant added.

The snatching happened near the house’s gate. The area was deserted when the robber attacked victim.

Soon the locals gathered at the spot, and informed Meerpet police. Inspector of Police, P. Sreedhar Reddy said that a case has been booked, an investigation is on. Cops have started efforts to identify the robber with the physical details given by the victim.

Vijayawada: A four-member gang on Tuesday kept the police of three districts on its toes, going on a spree of offences, including attacking an on-duty police constable, in Eluru of West Godavari and Vijayawada of Krishna district within a couple of hours.

The gang attacked the police constable on duty at Kankadurga Varadhi centre of Vijayawada on Tuesday evening and managed to flee with his wireless communication set (man-pack).

The gang, who came in an Indica car (AP 31 TV 1108) to Vijayawada on the National Highway 5 from Eluru, reportedly looted a passenger J. Rangaramesh, hours before they reached Vijayawada.
Rangaramesh had boarded the car at Ravulapalem to reach Hanuman Junction where he works as placement officer in a college.

According to sources, the four unidentified youths, including the car driver thrashed Rangaramesh at Eluru, and robbed him of Rs 7,000, gold ornaments and cellphone at gunpoint.

The miscreants later pushed him out of the car on the outskirts of Eluru.

Eluru police, after receiving a complaint from the victim, alerted Vijayawada police, giving the description and details of the car.

Traffic constable M. Srinivas, who was on duty at Varadhi centre, spotted the car stopped it. He then tried to pull the driver out of the car.

The driver however, hit the constable and started to move the vehicle.

Meanwhile, another person sitting in the back, snatched the wireless communication device from the constable and pushed him on to the road.

Srinivas received injuries and was admitted to hospital, according to Krishna Lanka inspector T.S.R.K. Prasad.

The driven then tried to take the car towards Guntur, but the city police meanwhile informed the personnel at Kaza tollgate.

Noticing the security at the tollgate was arranging a blockade, the miscreants reversed the car and sped away.

Vijayawada West zone assistant commissioner of police T. Hari Krishna visited the Tadepalli police station and alerted the inspector, who in turn formed three teams to nab the miscreants.

Vijayawada police, led by ACP D.V. Nageswara Rao and Mangalagiri police, led by DSP Madhusudhan Rao were trying to trace the vehicle and nab the miscreants.

Bangalore: This 29-year-old auto driver’s decision to make a few extra bucks by agreeing to ferry four youths from West Bengal to a remote part of the city late in the night last month nearly cost him his life, when the gang of first-time robbers stabbed him and escaped with his cash and valuables.

Manikantan, the driver ferried the youths from Hebbal towards a remote area nearing Nagawara. The youths forced the driver to stop near a lake and threatened him at knife point and robbed him off his Rs 700 in cash and a mobile phone.

The accused escaped after repeatedly stabbing the victim. Manikantan managed to drive to the main road and fell unconscious.

The night beat policemen who saw the victim shifted him to Sai Nursing Home near Hegde Nagar. Since Manikantan’s condition was serious, he was shifted to Bowring Hospital for more treatment, the police said.

The police had recorded the victim’s statements while he was in hospital. After his discharge on October 31st, the police took him to the scene of the crime and collected more details of the accused.

The police who tracked the mobile phone of the victim managed to trace the accused to Ashwatha Nagar in Sampigehalli.

The police arrested the five youths from West Bengal who had come to city to make a living. The accused confessed that they were frustrated unable to find any jobs and decided to try their luck in robbing and were caught in their very first attempt.

The police have identified the accused as Debeto Singh alias Raju (21), Rajesh Mondal (19), Dev Prasad Mondal alias Dev (22), Sudham Mondal alias Ashish (22) and Nobo Kumar Budeobh (26), all residents of Sanjaynagar and natives of West Bengal. They also siezed a gun and two live rounds.

The accused have been remanded to judicial custody. Going by the seriousness of the incident, it appears that the gang had decided to go on a robbing spree. But for their misfortune, they were arrested in their very first attempt. It is still not clear if they were involved in any other similar offences, said the police.

Further investigations are on.

10,000 packets of panmasala seized

Thiruvananthapuram: Excise officials on Tuesday seized 10,000 packets of panmasala worth over Rs15 lakh at Amaravila check post from a person, who was carting the contraband from across the district border at Kaliyikkavila.

The seizure was carried out at 6.30 a.m. when excise officials intercepted one Surendran, 38, of Neyyattinkara, along with six packets of panmasala, weighing 380 kg.

The suspect, who was later handed over to Parassala police, had picked the consignment from Kaliyikkavila and was on his way to deliver it to a conduit at Karamana in the city.

Excise circle inspector B. Chandran and excise inspector Mohan Kumar led the arrest team.

Sources said smuggling of tobacco had increased over the past two weeks. With the onset of Sabarimala season, several groups operating out of Tamil Nadu have started sending huge quantities of panmasala into Kerala.

There is a huge demand for panmasala among pilgrims from neighbouring Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The groups dealing in illegal sale of tobacco were taking full advantage of the situation and selling the product five to ten times or even 20 times more than the actual price.

Two days ago 4,000 packets of panmasala were seized at the same check post.

Meanwhile, officials of the excise, food safety, sales tax and police have increased the vigil at all check posts against smuggling tobacco into the state.

2kg gold seized at Karipur airport

Kozhikode: Customs officials at Karipur airport seized 2 kg gold from a passenger coming from Sharjah on Tuesday. The passenger, identified as Phamis, a native of Vadanapplay, near Thrissur attempted to smuggle the yellow metal concealed in emergency lamps, customs officials said. The seized gold is estimated to be worth Rs 61.50 lakh, they added. The person has been detained and his arrest will be recorded, said an official.

Kochi: The Kalamassery police on Tuesday arrested a person who forced his way into a jewellery shop at Edappally, attacked its staff and damaged properties.

Police said one Nelson of Ponekkara, barged into the Southern Gold Private Limited Jewellery shop near Edapally and damaged properties worth Rs 15 lakhs on Monday.

“He broke glasses and other furniture in as many as six cabins inside the shop using a machete. Finally we cordoned off the shop and arrested him”, officials said. The police is yet to ascertain the exact cause behind the attack.

He was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Aluva and was remanded to
custody for further investigation.
