A social network

A Facebook group has grown into a charitable trust to support the underprivileged.

Social media is getting socially relevant too.

A bunch of youngsters who met online came together to form a charitable movement called FK Snehadeepam. What began as a small social networking group was taken to a whole new level when they decided to do something meaningful.

“We started this group on Orkut in 2011 when it was alive and kicking. As the group began to getting stronger, we started meeting at restaurants and malls. These meetings led us to change our track and take on some socially relevant activities," says Jithin Nair, managing trustee of FK Snehadeepam.

When Facebook snapped up Orkut, the group shifted their base to Facebook and named it as Facebookile Keralam (FK).

“Our first meeting happened at Janaseva Sisubhavan, Aluva, in 2011. At that time, we were just a bunch of online friends who wanted to do something for society. It was after the initial meeting that we started to think about registering us a trust. Now the group has members ranging from school students to working professionals and they actively contribute to the charity," says Jithin, adding that they are receiving help from people outside India too.

FK Snehadeepam was registered two years ago and the group has so far organised seven programmes, the last of which was a visit to a children's organisation, Nanma Charitable Trust, in Kozhikode.

“Except the mission in Janaseva Sisubhavan, the other six programmes were conducted in remote areas. We identify organisations through mem bers in the group and we visit these places. We try to identify their requirements and help them. An average fund of Rs 40,000 is collected from our members to meet their necessities."
