THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Reigning champions Karnataka successfully defended their overall title by leading the table with 217 points in the 67th Senior National Aquatic Championship that concluded here on Sunday .
Maharashtra, who garnered 200 points, finished second, followed by Railways (187 points).
The final day lacked any major performances as no records were broken and was a stark contrast to the first three days of the championship, in which 12 national records were sunk.
Haryana's Shivani Kataria's performance was something that came close to breaking a nation al record as she clocked 58:92 in the 100m freestyle but missed the glory by a s microsecond. Sandeep Sejwal, who won four gold medals and set three national records, was able to finish only in second position in the 200m individual medley as P.S. Madhu of Services clinched the gold with a time of 2:09.38, nearly a second ahead of the Railway swimmer.
Maana Patel -who shattered three national bests -and Sandeep were adjudged best swimmers in the women and men's categories respectively.
Meanwhile, hosts Kerala were able to show supremacy only in the women's water polo championship as they defeated the Police team in the final. In the men's category, Services beat Railway in the title round.
