Aswin, Anju the fastest
Kochi: Malappuram's Aswin K P and Thiruvananthapuram's Anju A S were declared the fastest athletes at the State meet.
The quality in the 100 m dash, in all three categories, was unimpressive, but it offered unheralded athletes a place under the spotlight.
For Aswin, who hails from Nedungunnam, in Kottayam district, studying at MVMR HSS Valayamkulam, this is his first medal in a State meet. He clocked 10.90 seconds to take gold in the senior boys 100 m.“I've been coming to the State meets for three years and I am glad my first medal is gold,“ said a cheerful Aswin, who also finished first in the State junior meet, held at the same venue, last month.
Similarly , the story of +2 student Anju, from Thirumala, who won the senior girls 100 m with a time of 12.58 seconds.
Since her 7th standard Anju is a regular at State meets and has never before won a prize. She trains at the Sports Authority of India, in Thiruvananthapuram.
In the junior category , Rakhil A G of Palakkad and Jisna Mathew struck gold. Rakhil's 11.14 seconds was better than T K Sufaid's 11.30.
Kozhikode's Jisna finished at 12.65 beating Kottayam girl Dibi Sebastian, who came 0.15 seconds behind.
Alappuzha has a history of sprinters with national record holder Anil Kumar, hailing from there and Rahul Raj K R kept the tradition, in the sub-junior boys category , winning with a time of 12.07 seconds.
Ernakulum girl Sofiya Sunny won the sub-junior girls 100 m with a time of 13.36 seconds. In a photo finish she out beat Adithya U. of Alappuzha by 1/100th of a second.
