Will Lehar bring rain to Tamil Nadu?

Met office in Chennai is not too hopeful of copious rain from cyclonic storm.

Chennai: Cyclone Lehar formed in the Bay of Bengal and moving North might not bring much rain to Tamil Nadu, say weather experts here.

They point out that the weather system might intensify into a cyclonic storm or a severe cyclonic storm over the next few days and is expected to cross between Machilipattinam and Kalingapatnam by November 28 or 29.

“But, Tamil Nadu might get benefit from it in terms of rainfall. There might be isolated showers in various parts of the city and surrounding areas as it happened on Sunday but not much,” says Dr Y.E.A Raj, deputy director general at the Regional Meteorological Center here.

He points out that the weather system might have to clear before the city could receive rainfall. “We have to wait and see if the monsoon revives after this weather system clears over the coming week,” Dr Raj said.

The city and its surrounding areas have received inadequate rainfall during this monsoon and fears of a deficit year loom large among water mangers here.

The city’s reservoirs are hardly in a comfortable position considering that less than a week remains for November to run out. Water managers are keeping their fingers crossed hoping the dam catchment areas will get good rains.

Under Lehar’s influence, rain or thundershowers would occur at many places over AP, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and coastal and south interior Karnataka, IMD said in its weather outlook for four days from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1.

Cyclone Helen and last month's Phailin storms hit Andhra as well as Odisha causing considerable damage to crops while also causing a few deaths in both states.
