Student Police Cadet to popularise sports, games

The General Education Department in association with the Student Police Cadet.

Thiruvananthapuram: The General Education Department in association with the Student Police Cadet (SPC) initiative will start a programme for popularising sports and games in schools.

As part of the initiative, the SPC in association with the Chess Association of Kerala (CAK) conducted a workshop for students and physical education teachers from schools in Thiruvananthapuram district. About 130 students and teachers participated in the programme.

SPC Nodal Officer P. Vijayan said the plan was to provide the infrastructure required to train students in chess in as many schools as possible.

The idea was to get students engaged in various sports during their spare time. Apart from chess, football, handball, kho- kho and volleyball had been identified as apt for children in schools, Vijayan said.

The scheme for popularising chess in schools was in its planning stage and discussions were being held with the officials of the CAK. After the successful implementation of chess, the SPC will hold discussions with other associations, Vijayan said.

The training will not be restricted to cadets of SPC. All students can participate.
