Woman accused of smuggling 26 kg of gold detained under COFEPOSA
Thrissur (Kerala): A woman accused of smuggling 26 kg of gold from Dubai two months back has been detained in nearby Chavakad under COFEPOSA, police said on Sunday.
Arifa Faris (27) was held at Chavakad on Saturday on an order by the Principal Secretary, Home Department, N. Radhakrishnan.
Police said the charge against her was that she had thrice smuggled 26 kg of gold on behalf of Fayaz, an accused in large-scale gold smuggling to India.
Arifa, who lives in Dubai with her husband Abdul Rahman, often came to Kerala with contraband gold since 2008, police said, adding that she was jailed for 46 days after she was caught with smuggled gold in September.
The government had issued an arrest warrant against her under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Act (COFEPOSA) when she was released from jail, police said.
