Stuck in traffic, Bangaloreans pump up the volume
Tech-savvy Bangaloreans enjoying entertainment onboard to beat city's busy traffic.
Bangalore: Get in, fasten the seatbelt, lug in the gadgets, connect them via Bluetooth and enjoy the ride! There is no way one can beat the traffic on city's roads, but tech-savvy Bangaloreans have learnt to beat the stress linked with it. Welcome to entertainment onboard.
Watch movies, standup comedy shows, interviews, sitcoms, music videos and live streaming, all while driving through maddening traffic.
With the average mobility on city’s roads hitting a low of 10 kmph during peak hours, the frustrating drive, in fact, has given time for the people to enjoy their favourite sitcoms onboard. While audio-video systems hit the Indian market a good nine years ago, they were primarily being used to watch music videos and movies in four-wheelers, mainly by the passengers.
But there has been a transformation since then, and the focus is now on entertainment for drivers, rather than the co passengers. While on wheel, the drivers are savouring live streaming of satellite channels, cricket matches, news or downloaded Dvix format programmes, which can be played on the new age AV systems. For live streaming of content, all that they need is a tablet and a datacard SIM.
The sale of A-V players has zoomed over 500% as more four wheelers are opting for the changeover. Not only A-Vs, even tablets have made their way into four-wheels!
Says Murali Krishna K., VP of an MNC bank: “I download programmes like Russel Peters shows, Two and a Half Men, interviews from TBIP (The Big Indian Pictures), Koffee with Karan and many others. I also download movies from the Internet.
Just have to plug in the external memory to the system to watch these programmes. It's free, it's fun and makes me smile while I crawl through the traffic on Maratahalli Outer Ring Road. While I play the downloads on my AV system, I have a Sony tablet that is fixed near the windshield, which is mainly for live streaming or watching progarmmes on Youtube.''
Murali adds that apps are the icing on the cake. "There is a mindboggling array of apps, including navigation apps, music apps and search engine apps, that help the driver and keep him entertained." Mahendra Reddy, who runs an auto accessories store in Indiranagar, says that he has been witnessing revolutionary changes in onboard entertainment technology every year.
"You have gadgets like Caska, Map My India, AV systems from leading companies like Sony, Panasonic, JVC, which are dishing out new versions ever so often. The Bluetooth integration of phones and AV systems has taken entertainment to another level,'' he said.
