Cancer centre campaign goes online
Kochi: Mayor Tony Chammany and deputy mayor B. Bhadra on Saturday inaugurated the social media campaign on facebook for setting up a government cancer research centre and hospital on the Cochin Co-operative Medical College campus. The inauguration function was held at the residence of Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer who is spearheading the campaign.
Tony Chammany said that a meeting of all concerned would be convened soon to force the government into taking the initiative for setting up the centre. He said that at any cost the budgetary allocation of Rs 5 crore sanctioned in the previous budget could not be allowed to lapse.
The current suggestion of the movement is to start the cancer centre in two wards of the CMC and appoint a cancer surgeon at the division.
“With people’s representatives coming forward to support the cause of the cancer centre, we thought of entering the social media to drive home the message among the youth,” said Dr N.K. Sanil Kumar who is co-ordinating the movement.
